Doing great work matters—but so does being seen by the people making decisions. There is a piece of career advice that sounds good, feels good, and is woefully incomplete: Work hard, do a great job, and somebody will notice. Maybe. But I wouldn’t build my career strategy around “maybe.” Strong performance is essential. You cannot consistently produce mediocre work and expect to build a serious professional reputation. Performance establishes credibility. It gets you into the
